I am hoping they take off about $50 for the 1.5GB version. Unless you go eyefinity or trifire, It will be worth getting the "gimped" version. I don't think these unlock which is why many still got the unlockable 2gb version of the HD 6950 instead of the locked 1gb version of the same card. If the two HD 6950s performed the same, I imagine the HD 7950s will too.
The new range of Core i5 processors is with the graphics circuitry stripped from the die. Makes sense really as many enthusiast users have never touched, or have no interest in using that part of the design, opting for discrete graphics instead.
This cards looks to be a solid performer, although it mostly looks to trade blows with the GTX580 (depending on the game/review/settings/resolution) - for better or worse.
I expect the higher binned OC models with custom cooling to do even better.
HDD shortage has only a small amount to do with this. Apple sold 26% more macs last quarter. Microsoft said in their earnings calls that business demand was strong while consumer demand was weak. We all know laptops are now outselling desktops.
Second reason is that Tegra2 was flying off the shelf in all the ipad killers. Tegra3 will fly off the shelf in the next generation of ipad killers.
There are two real problems with the Chromebooks: the off-line (non)functionality and the speed for certain apps. Both could be resolved by using a very simple approach: allowing native applications, managed by or within Chrome tabs, verified by Google before reaching the WebStore. The management within tabs means independent process(es), while the native code means speed. I guess...
In addition to releasing the Catalyst 12.1 Official WHQL suite, AMD has today rolled out another graphics driver, a preview version of the Catalyst 12.2.
Pretty good, but the high cost of x79 platform veers me off from even considering the purchase.
