I know first hand how much of grief it is when you have a Tech problem and all you can do is post to a forum and wait for the right answer so my suggestion would be a Live Chat Room that you can get in contact with someone who can help you at any given time especially if your in a jam and can't wait for an answer.

An IRC Channel may be just the the thing and it probably could be set up in less than a few hours.

As the contested King of the Shoutbox, I find these motions to form a new kingdom unsettling.

On a serious note: I've searched up and down for a YAF compatible IRC plugin, but to no avail. It doesn't seem like it would *too* terribly hard to adapt one over from vBulletin, but I can't say for sure as I've never personally done such a thing. It may, in fact, be easier to migrate the whole forum over to vBulletin (pretty sure there's a database conversion utility that will migrate the data over to vBulletin appropriate tables and formats).

Either which way, it may be more trouble than anyone really wants to invest given the whole "If it's not broke, don't fix it" though process that comes to mind when weighing all of this work against the benefit of a live chat.

So after looking into this and failing to find any chat plugins for YetAnotherForum (who's primary disadvantage is having an acronym google automatically assumes to mean "Young Adult Fiction") -- I think I've come up with a little work around.

The staff might be able to modify the CSS for the forums to a mobile check, and if the client isn't using a mobile browser (phone, tablet, etc), the right-hand margin (which id currently blank, since the only ad displayed is up in the header) could contain a floating Chatango window. It's free, easy to use for clients, and easy to configure for the staff, customization, and very responsive.

If we could make this work, we'd have live chat that is accessible from every part of the forums; not just a subsection of the index. And by making it float/persistant, we could maintain that chat functionality as people scroll down.
