I upgraded from Windows 7 and have something called Windows DVD player automagically installed alongside things like the calculator. I think if you upgraded from a version that still had DVD playback, you might gotten to keep it. Not that I've ever used it, I prefer Media Player Classic.

My PVR software, NPVR, has its own playback, but I've always preferred MPC. Maybe just because I'm used to it, but I rely heavily on both the bookmarking and custom key assignments.

VLC is versatile, I keep it around in case a file gets screwed up (bad signal or something) and it's more likely to be able to play anything you throw at it, but I only use it when I have to.

There was still a question in my mind about just how much linux stuff would run under this setup. Just CLI tools or guis too? Different articles have used different emphases when describing Ubuntu on Windows. Reddit to the rescue.

guis might work but you will need to trick the system. i started work on getting a gui to run but i kinda ran out of time. all commands available to ubuntu are available to the bash on windows app. that being said even though some "work" meaning they install properly, they tend to not actually work. i would give a couple of months for somebody to come up with a work around for the gui issue. that is if microsoft doesnt restrict bash on windows commands.
