The XPocalypse pushed a lot of people to add linux mint or even ChromeOS to their old hardware to keep it safe and usable.

Nah, just my nickname for the end of MS support for Windows XP.

ironically there is a registry edit that would allow a user to get update till 2019 though how effective they would be for a standard user can be debated

What sorts of things do you think XP would fail on?

new hardware would not be as effective as xp. security and anything that needs a 64 bit os.

The security thing is kind of the point of the ongoing updates -- so it wouldn't be pointless to provide updates to keep it secure.

XP is a little under optimized, but it's not too bad for general computing. I figured you might be thinking of features like universal apps or connectivity or even SSD awareness and tweaks like it that could be provided by 3rd party utilites.

Even in it's current aggressively unsupported form (with MS, developers and news outlets all actively trying to scare people away), there are still 10% of desktop users on XP. Mac and linux combined have less desktop market share than that. If real support was still alive, that might 20%. It's a very capable OS for lots of ordinary general computing tasks and I see no reason, other than security which security updates could provide, that wouldn't continue to be the case.

But, the people still on XP are elders. Eventually, although is sounds awful, they will phase out and most will be on Win7 or Win10 (I didn't mention Win8 cause it is crap :P).

I'm pretty sure the elderly are using chromebooks and iPads.

And talking about them phasing out does sound awful sad

I agree in principle that it would be best if the world both continued to spin and circumnavigate the sun, but I fail to see the connection between that and the passing of elderly. sad
