One would not ordinarily associate one's last play in an existential struggle to reclaim former glory with a relaxed, laissez faire, sand-raking, slow breathing demeanor... a.k.a. Zen. But I suppose, there is something to be said with a cool, calm exit from mayhem, a la the Hollywood trope slow walk away from an exploding building.

Cool Cat

In any case, I kinda like where AMD is at for desktop (for laptops, I've been buying intel for cooler, quieter, longer lived offerings), offering a huge value proposition, especially with their APUs. But from what I've read, even old Intel CPUs wipe the floor with AMD, which would certainly explain why I got heart palpitations when I briefly checked prices on an Intel build before my last upgrade. I'd still be saving for a processor if I'd gone that route, to say nothing of a motherboard and RAM.

I have two competing thoughts about Zen. The first is that AMD needs to gain ground on the high end in order to continue to survive in the budget realm. I think that's true because companies use their higher end lines to subsidize budget lines all the time. I feel AMD may be robbing Peter to pay Paul to keep their budget line as affordable as it is now.

My second thought is that if Zen really can compete with intel at the high end, it may not gear down well enough to sell at current APU pricing (even the newest stuff that hasn't been marked down yet). Not that AMD would end their budget line, but that it might be populated with stale updates of existing tech rather than seeing a serious leap forward. And unless that budget line gets priced even lower, AMD's value proposition would erode as the number of bangs per buck diminishes compared to higher end lines.

What do you guys think? Can AMD win with Zen and still take care of their loyal cheapskate following?

Yes and no. It really depends on how Zen performs and how its priced. If priced competitively like rumor has it, then it will do well. AMD however will probably always have a stigma with them, although they may have good stuff for decent prices. We'll see, eh?

I don't prefer either, I just want to see competition for lower prices.

I guess I think the most likely outcome is that Zen won't really have a true budget line at the outset, and instead we'll see AM4 versions of today's high end stuff refreshed a little and priced down.

If you're in the mood for some light reading, here's a ten part series from yesterday on AMD's position and upcoming moves from a market perspective. It covers everything from VR to HBM2 to Polaris to of course, Zen.

Some people might call it comprehensive, I suppose wink but it's all so fascinating the time just flies. Even if you just look at the illustrations, there's a lot of info you can glean fast. I knew how bad AMD matched up against Intel's marketshare, but I had no idea how poorly they were doing against Nvidia.

My 7750 build held on for more than 6 years, but it's one of those things where I certainly would have upgraded sooner if I'd had the money. I also love the fact that some people upgrade early and often, it leads to some near mint parts going for a fraction of their cost. My current motherboard cost me about half what it should have, opened but unused because someone changed their mind mid-build. To each their own.

Leaked Zen benchmarks: http://techfrag.com/2016...d-zen-benchmarks-leaked/

Quote:
The 95W TDP if accurate, alongside 8 high performance Zen cores with multi-threading, indicates that the next gen desktop FX CPUs from AMD are indeed very power efficient and should be on par with Intel’s new CPU lineup launching this June.

Benchmark screen shots at link above.
