I am curious if this is a bad sensor or if I have some sort of hotspot on my motherboard. I use Speccy to keep abreast of what is in my system. And it incluldes temperatures for the CPU, the GPU and the MoBo. The CPU and GPU seem fine and run at roughly 42C to 47C most of the time. The MoBo goes off the rails though - heading to 102C to 127C! Wow! Even if I turn off the computer and let is sit for awhile, when I start it up, the MoBo will show as running hot the vast majority of times, though I've seen it show as similar temps as the other components a couple of times.

So what is cooking with that? Do I need to add a fan and point it someplace? My motherboard is an Asus P5N73-AM.Socket 775 It is running an Intel Core Duo L7300 @ 2.66Hz I'm concerned about the heat and if I need to be taking action now so I don't fry something.

Maybe want to contact the manufacturer of the board, also, do you have a laser thermal reader/scanner? Maybe you can see yourself where the heat is with something in your hands. Go off of two things, not one.

Blackhawk, I do have a IR temp scanner but I'll be a bit finding the little bugger! I used it for checking temperatures on my pizza stone when doing charcoal/wood fired pizza on my Weber kettle grill. Now it will come in handy for a bit of higher tech sleuthing. I wonder where Asus is taking their reading? I will scan the MoBo at various spots but maybe I should email Asus and ask.

Update: IR gun found, batteries still working. Laser tag with the MoBo will commence later!

Cool! Good luck! Better to have two things tell you the temp, as one could fail :P

The heat will most likely be coming from the Chipset.

Depending on your board... there is probably a heat sink covering the chipset, and your handheld thermal sensor might not see it.

Check all of the heat sinks on the motherboard to make sure the thermal paste has not dried up, and make sure it is still making contact with the chip.

I would suggest replacing the thermal paste on those heat sinks anyway, even if it looks fine.

It just seemed like something reddit would make. The internet is weird.

Well, the overheating is crashing my computer now. I can bring it up for a few minutes or an hour at a time and then it just goes dark. Give it a few hours of no power and I can bring it back up usually. This time it came up and no overheating at all. So weird. Well, I have the IR gun and will drag it down to the local computer shop on Monday so we can locate the problem and see if reapplying the heat sink paste helps. Otherwise, my SSD budget is shot while I try to find a good used MoBo that takes the ram and processor I have on this system.

No, upgrading at this time with newer ram, processor and so forth is way, way out of focus.
