My speakers are surround sound and its great for watching movies.
My headphones are surround sound also and its pretty neat to get the same function. Plus its quiet for the old lady.
My choice is speakers cause I don't like long game/movie sessions with headphones as it can get uncomfortable even with the padding.
Well, as the person above me said, they both have their benefits. Speakers are nice for a relaxing movie or a game with surround sound. Headphones can do the same things, but there aren't that many downsides to them. If you get higher end ones with more padding, and muffs that go AROUND the ear, they are nice. Headphones add a better feel to a game when playing, and are amazing when paired with 3D sound (3D sound is surround sound but if a sound is behind you in game, it will be quiet for you). It boils down to preference and whether or not your experiences were bad. If you don't want to go off preference, here is a list of benefits and downsides I could think of:
~Offer 3D and More Realism To Sound In Games
~Can Have A Mic Attached w/ Easy To Reach Volume Controls (Generally, Not Always)
~Can be uncomfortable if pads aren't big enough or are TOO big.
~I chew on my headphone cable, bad habit, and can mess up a headphone set. (Don't do it, if there is exposed wires, I wrapped mine up with some black electrical tape on black wires.
~Offer Surround Sound
~Great For Movies
~Sufficient for Several People Around You At PC
~Loud when it isn't wanted/needed
~No Possible Mic Attachment
So yeah, it doesn't matter whether you have headphones or speakers, all that matters is skill.
I used my phone as a communication device via Ventrilo during my raiding days and had speakers on for in-game sound while I had earphones in. Raiding didn't really require the need to hear footsteps all around you so there are definitely situations where it's not necessary. All in all, utilize both to adhere to your playstyle.

For certain games where position is not necessary and training material I use stereo speakers.
I plug in my Logitech G930 headphones when I need positional surround sound and so everyone doesn't hear zombies. I also need them for the Microphone. If you do happen to buy the Logitech headphones also buy a hot glue gun at some point they will break even with delicate use so I put them on and hot glued the earcups into the on my head natural position. Not actually to my head but I also managed to glue some hair in the process so not exactly my shining moment but a good laugh and they still work today.
