September is shaping up to be one heck of a busy month. The kids will be back in school (if not already, depending on where you live), Apple will launch its iPhone 6, and if the latest rumor turns out to be true, Microsoft on September 30th will introduce the world to Windows 9, otherwise known as Threshold, during a press event.

This is a tentative date, according to the un-named sources The Verge spoke with. These sources are supposedly "familiar with Microsoft's plans," and since this isn't the first we've heard of Microsoft giving users a glimpse of Windows 9 in September, we're optimistic (albeit cautiously) that the info is accurate.

The launch rumor comes after recent reports that Microsoft is planning to offer users a preview version of Windows 9 in late September or early October. As reported, everyone from developers to consumers will be able to play with the preview version and see the new features.

Based on previous chatter and leaked info, Windows 9 will bring to the desktop a new mini Start Menu and a bunch of user interface changes. It's also been said that the Charms Bar will be removed from Windows 9, at least for desktops and laptops -- it might still be available on tablets.

So would this just be a preview or a launch. I'm a little confused by the verbage used. Beginning parts of the article talk about a launch but a preview is far from a launch.

What typically comes with a "preview version" of an OS? I had no idea Windows 9 was this close to launch already.

They start working on the next OS just before the launch of the Windows 8. They would have been working on it for about 2 yrs now.

"Launch" probably isn't the best word, it's more of an introduction. Based on what The Verge and its sources are saying, Microsoft will introduce its next OS (presumably called Windows 9) and demonstrate some of its features.

The preview release is a separate rumor and may or may not be related to the introduction. However, if Microsoft's going to offer a Windows 9 Release Preview (like it did with Window 8 - http://www.microsoft.com.../05-31windows8rppr.aspx) then there's a good chance they'll announce availability when introducing the OS.
