GameStick, a small computer-on-a-stick with a companion controller that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port and plays Android games, has done the Kickstarter thing as well as could be expected, and now the company has shipped developer units. The GameStick team says that over 600 developers have jumped on board the GameStick bandwagon, including indie and major studios, although one batch of devices has been held up in customs.

However, Kickstarter backers won’t be seeing their GameSticks until the middle of June due to some manufacturing changes (which seem to be de rigeur with these Kickstarter darlings that experience an unexpected demand for volume.)

GameStick controller

GameStick says that it was initially planning for a main production run of about 1,000 units and was going to make them with the same silicon molds it used for the dev models. However, demand shot up to tens of thousands of units, and the silicon mold method can’t scale that way. GameStick is instead using production facilities in Japan and Germany, which will cause a delay in shipping for a few months.

The good news is that because of grassroots support, GameStick has a much better chance of success; the bad news is that because of that success, units will be delayed. So it goes.

This item is perfect. i love my android games, plague inc. being my favorite and i actually downloaded YouWave the android emulator just so i could play while working on a research paper for school.

Not a good idea to try and multitask plague, you usually lose and aren't productive either.

Production and shipping is an issue especially for a small company like this. As soon as market has been proven a big producer like Samsung steps in and wipes the floor with the competition.

Any ideas on how to make kick starter less of a one hit wonder maker and more of a sustain-er of quality business and growth?

just what I need is is another reason to play mindcraft. This would be something to put on my grandsons TV. With all of the games out there I could keep my grandson busy (he is only 15months old) He loves playing with my Nexus7 and he loves anything with buttons. I like the idea of being able to move this to any TV in the house.

This for my buddies two year old would be perfect. That is the first thing I though of seeing this since she loves anything that is on the TV or has buttons.

As BioShock infinite has taught us, it's always better to delay a little bit if it means releasing a quality product.

HotHardware should do a review/comparison of different new android consoles like the GameStick and Ouya
