True story: I ventured down to my local Best Buy and stood in line the day Apple launched it's iPad 2. It was a longer line than the one I waited in during the original iPad's launch, and this time around, Best Buy employees tried their hardest to create a buzz for a product that really doesn't need it. There were excited pre-release announcements over the PA, there was music, and there was a blue-shirted employee standing on top of a ladder yelling to the crowd in an attempt to drum up excitement. It was over the top, and it was unnecessary for a product that virtually sells itself because, let's face it, Apple knows how to market itself.

What's my point? Well, maybe Best Buy should bottle up all that energy and use it on other tablets. Case in point: AllThingsDigital is reporting that the electronics chain is sitting on a huge pile of Hewlett Packard TouchPad tablets, and hardly anyone's buying them up. Even after the recent $50 price cut, which itself speaks volumes about the demand for TouchPads (or lack thereof), Best Buy is having trouble moving these slates.

Citing "one source who has seen internal HP reports," AllThingsD reports Best Buy signed for 270,000 TouchPad devices, but has only managed to move around 25,000 out the door. That's less than 10 percent, and according to another source, even that 25,000 figure is "charitable."

As the story goes, Best Buy is none too happy that all these tablets are taking up valuable shelf and warehouse space that could otherwise be occupied by products that actually sell. Best Buy wants HP to take them back, while HP wants the chain to give it a bit more time. It's such a big issue that a high level HP exec is traveling to Minneapolis to discuss the situation with Best Buy.

In case you're wondering, the TouchPad runs $400 for the 16GB version and $500 for the 32GB model. Had you picked one up in June when it first launched, you would have paid $500 and $600 for the same models, respectively.

You must be so proud having stood in line twice for ipads. Must have felt like a sheep. "A" loves their sheep. That first paragraph turned my stomach. Chill on the "a" crap. So HP toy sucks because all the sheep are buying "A" toys.

Dude, turn off your PC and take a walk in the park.

Count to 500.

Smell the roses.

Take some Pepto and try to chill yourself a little.

All I know is HP didn't see clear to sending us one for review yet, so that must be why. ;)

realneil,

Thanks for the advice. No doubt I have some sort of pathological hate response to anything "A" related.

That is a very valid point Dave I have not really seen any reviews on any of there new WEB OS hardware period. It is kind of funny really as I keep up with release dates etc.

That is also a very valid point realneil to pdjblum "Dude, turn off your PC and take a walk in the park.Count to 500.Smell the roses.Take some Pepto and try to chill yourself a little." . The only people intrigued in general by the slate model seem to be the iSheep. BB totally screwed there's up, HP has pretty much done the same, heck if I don't even know there released as normal consumer probably has no clue it was ever coming or even what Web OS is.

Apple markets well to there followers and has for several years, so there followers follow what there selling. HP, Dell, IBM/Lenovo, BB, Samsung, Motorola, and pretty muchg everyone besides Apple has been either [censored]up, missing releases, releases device's that are not finished or do not work completely. So it is primarily there own fault. I personally still like my desktop best and use it more. Yes the smart phone is useful as well. I rarely use the laptop personally, and everyone in my house is pretty much the same. In fact I desperately need another desktop as we only have 2, but we have 3 active users.

When are these companies going to wake up and face the reality that they're wasting their time, money and resources creating these useless iPad imitations. The people don't want these other tablets. I was an Apple hater and eventually gave in and bought an iPad. I havent touched my Android tablet since. I hardly touch my netbook any more. All these companies are succeeding at is giving Steve Jobs something to laugh about.

Just don't get what these toys offer for all that money. Other companies trying to compete maybe suggest to a far wider range of people that these things are worth buying, when they should in fact only appeal to people who don't already have enough gadgets. I admit, I am a hardcore desktop person. I don't even like laptops, much less anything smaller and less powerful.

Yeah,

me too. I have three of my own and have just built another one for my

wife. Price and performance are the best with a desktop, as well as

being able to configure and modify it any way that you want to.

I've seen more than a few of these Androids that work great. They do what they're designed to do, well. (like the iPad does)

I was probably going to buy an Android this Christmas season, but my daughter just bought me an iPad 3G as a present. I get it on Friday and I have to admit that I'm looking forward to checking it out.

So yeah, the iPad is the best one out there, according to many users, but there are a lot of reasons why an Android Tab is a good choice for many people. (not just the price)

Being able to get your Apps from anywhere is a good thing. Android does that,...right?

If you want to do that with the iPad, you have to 'JAILBREAK' it, and then they'll give your warranty the middle finger for breaking their rules with the device that you thought that you bought and own.

You can argue for and against either one of them until you're blue in the face.

I think they should simply donate their entire stock to education and write it off :)

The only way jailbreaking would void your warranty is if you were dumb enough to walk into the Apple store or whichever authorized dealer you bought your phone from and handed them your phone jailbroken. Anyone that knows anything about jailbreaking knows to restore their iPhone using iTunes FIRST before taking it in for service. As far as installing apps from anywhere with Android, I can tell you, as an owner of both a rooted Motorola Droid and a rooted Nook Color, it's a pain in the ass when compared to the streamlined method using Cydia's Installous. Nuff said.

Hit up the manager of your local Best Buy - maybe he'll loan you one if you promise to give it a good review![:D]

Being in the IT field, I’m a daily user of the 3 platforms (PC,

notebook and tablet) and have found that they all have their advantages. I use

a desktop primarily for the bulk of my work. In the evenings however I rarely

use my home desktop. Instead I’ll use my notebook if I need to get some serious

work done but for the past few months I’m using my iPad more and more for browsing,

answering quick emails, and reading.

I agree with MaXGTS911, I have also never been a fan of Apple as I considered their

entire product line overpriced for what they deliver but I must admit that when

it comes to tablets they are, for now, the only game in town. I first tried the

iPad in March when our company bought them for our senior management team.  I evaluated one of units for about a month prior

to issuing them and while I did not find them particular useful as a ‘productivity

tool’ I enjoyed its portability and limited capabilities. I was sold on the

concept of a tablet, so I went ahead and bought an Android (Motorola Xoom) for

personal use, about two weeks I returned it. It just wasn’t the same smooth

experience. Luckily, Verizon started clearing out the original iPads with some

heavy discounting and I picked one up at the ‘proper’ price.

I’m sorry to say this but the Android devices are still not able to provide as smooth an experience as the iPad and their apps suck. I haven’t tried a Web OS device

yet but it seems they’re coming up short as well.
