If only the water block were smarter than the water is relentless. It's always wearing away at those seals. The means maintenance, and I loathe maintenance. I prefer to set it and forget it.
eGPUs are becoming a thing. AMD is cooperating with Razer on drivers and making those available for anyone to build with and I think I saw something more recently on an nVidia eGPU option. I'm eager to see more.

Already sort of building something using a Cooler Master Elite 110 Mini-ITX case
CPU: Intel-based probably i7-6700k or wait for next line of cpus.
MOBO: ASRock or ASUS, haven't had much luck with MSI or Gigabyte although I heard they have been making higher quality boards than before.
RAM: 8-32GB RAM DDR3 2133 with lowest timings or DDR4 since it is newer technology.
Storage: Intel 750 SSD in Raid 0 or 5. (case only supports up to 4 SSDS :/)
GRAPHICS: ASUS GeForce GTX 970 (Best mini version card that will fit this case)
(Might just have to go with a longer case to support higher end video cards.
Other than that obviously a GTX 1080 in SLI
Cooling (liquid of course!)
It would be nice to see more video card manufacturers create mini versions of higher end video cards.

Yeah, I've compared a lot of bench tests and clocks between the Titan X and the 1080s since the NDA lifted, and suprisingly for their price point the 1080s do outperform the Titan X in most games and uses -- but there are some applications (specifically targeting 4k) where the Titan wins...
BUT, I suppose at the end of the day, the main benefit of the 1080 is it's overclock potential, and none of the benches I've looked at were OC'd... More over, even in the applications where the Titan did win, it didn't win by very much - so I guess the money I'd be saving by getting a couple 1080s (like, literally $2,200 gets shaved off the total build quote) would more than make up for any performance loss I'd have overall given that the 1080s don't support 3-way SLI.
So, yeah - you win, and I've adjusted my ideal rig.
I'm almost 100% sure most liquid cooling systems today use some form on non-conductive liquid such as fluorinert to prevent such mishaps. I once used a fishtank with said fluorinert to fully submerge an old AMD slot cpu I had overclocked for fun and nothing was ruined in the process.
