On a serious note: I've searched up and down for a YAF compatible IRC plugin, but to no avail. It doesn't seem like it would *too* terribly hard to adapt one over from vBulletin, but I can't say for sure as I've never personally done such a thing. It may, in fact, be easier to migrate the whole forum over to vBulletin (pretty sure there's a database conversion utility that will migrate the data over to vBulletin appropriate tables and formats).
Either which way, it may be more trouble than anyone really wants to invest given the whole "If it's not broke, don't fix it" though process that comes to mind when weighing all of this work against the benefit of a live chat.
The staff might be able to modify the CSS for the forums to a mobile check, and if the client isn't using a mobile browser (phone, tablet, etc), the right-hand margin (which id currently blank, since the only ad displayed is up in the header) could contain a floating Chatango window. It's free, easy to use for clients, and easy to configure for the staff, customization, and very responsive.
If we could make this work, we'd have live chat that is accessible from every part of the forums; not just a subsection of the index. And by making it float/persistant, we could maintain that chat functionality as people scroll down.
And least amount of pain to setup xD
