I don't have any experience overclocking a GTX 960.

I do have experience overclocking other video cards, and it has been my experience that it is NOT worth it.

What you gain is minor improvements in performance.

What you lose is reliability of your GPU.

A typical overclock that is considered "safe" will net you about 10% performance improvement. What that means is, if you were getting 45 fps before, now you will get 49. You wont be able to tell the difference. If you have VSync turned on, you will actually be running at 30 FPS.

If you are getting 63fps, and OC will get you to 70fps. With Vsync on, you will actually be at 60fps. With Vsync off and without freesync or G-Sync, you will have screen tearing.

in another scenario... you could be at 58fps, and the OC will get you up to 63fps. Which sounds great on paper because at 58fps with vsync on, you drop down to 30fps. At 63, you will run at 60fps. But the unintended consequence is that you will actually be flipping between 30 and 60 which will make the game feel like it is slowing down from time to time. It's really quite annoying.

But with an OC, your gpu will run hotter, which means it will not last as long.

If you still want to give it a try though despite my warning, you should take down some baseline performance statistics on your favorite games and then add 10% and see where you will land with an OC to determine if it's worth it for you.
