Most everything I used to have was DDR3. As of now I am starting from scratch for building a PC gaming rig. I am seeing DDR4 more and more this year and I am unsure if I should just opt for DDR4 or stay with DDR3 right now. My main concerns would be affordability and making sure I have hardware compatible with DDR4. Is there a huge benefit to DDR4 for gaming, or are the differences not noticeable if I had just stuck with DDR3?

DDR3 is still good enough if you don't want a 6-core PC. If you still remain on the still current generation 4-core CPU then you'll find that DDR3 is still good enough. It's only if you want to go 6-core (onto Intel's newer platform) or above that you'll truly need the DDR4. However if I were you I would just buy DDR3 until DDR4 is mainstream enough and/or you truly need a 6/8 core PC.

At this point I would wait unless you're planning on keeping your motherboard and CPU for a long time. Even then, my next PC will still use DDR3.

As you can see in this review, there's not a lot of difference at this time:

Just depends on your PC plan I guess.

I figured as much, just keep my DDR3 unless I went all out with new hardware. I have a couple extra ATX and ATX baby mobos laying around in case I needed them, all DDR3 ofc.
