After a couple of accidents involving Tesla’s Model S electric car resulted in fires, the company has scrambled to find a solution that didn’t involve completely re-engineering the undercarriage and engine compartment. That solution has taken the form of a relatively simple three-part titanium shield underneath the vehicle.

The fires resulted when road debris punctured the Model S’s battery compartment when the vehicle ran over them at high speeds, so Tesla decided to simply improve that specific area of the car. There are now three titanium pieces protecting the compartment.

There’s a hollow bar designed to deflect or absorb the impact of road debris and at least knock it forward away from the battery compartment. There’s also a plate that’s there simply as an added layer of puncture-proofing, and the third piece is set at a slight angle and can absorb an object’s force, actually helping the Model S ramp up and over debris.

Judging from CEO Elon Musk’s blog post about the shields, you get the sense that he feels that the whole thing is a bit ridiculous. He notes that even though there were two fires in Model S incidents, all of the safety measures already built in--including the onboard warning computer and steel and ceramic firewalls-kept the occupants safe.

He also stated that to date, there have been zero fatalities and serious injuries related to the Model S, and that the fire risk in a Model S even before the addition of the titanium shields is five times less than in a normal gasoline-powered car.

“Nonetheless, we felt it was important to bring this risk down to virtually zero to give Model S owners complete peace of mind,” he wrote. As a result, the Model S is a car that can actually crush concrete as it drives over it. Seriously, check out the video in Musk’s blog post.

I really don't know why the decide to make electric car beside the point of pollution because all of the pollution is from rocket ships gas and them breaking through the at-mos sphere so cars don't really effect it that much and if they think its also for global warming look at Canada we still have 2-3 feet of snow and still seems to be snowing some more

They have to make it looking like they are trying to fix it by doing something.

You can't argue that global warming isn't happening just because it is snowing in Canada. You are using a personal experience or an isolated example instead of a sound argument or compelling evidence. There are vast amounts of statistics and data that support climate change.

Apparently, Tony, you missed your 5th grade unit on weather and climate. Your confusion is inexcusable if you're more than 10 years old. Climate is long term--decades and more. Weather is day to day or seasonal. You can have huge variations in weather but these variations level out over 30 or 40 years.

However, If you're a republican, your fantasy is far more real than any evidence anyone could offer.

TwoFaceTony is either an ignorant troll,

or simply the most retarded, stupid f*** human being that has ever lived.

"all of the pollution is from rocket ships gas and them breaking through the at-mos sphere"

How can you actually be this stupid?

Wow, talking about "off topic".

I applaud Tesla for taking extra steps even if unnecessary. The extra piece of mind is worth it.

Now I just wish I had the money to buy a Tesla... .

sorry, but what are you talking about? Rockets  breaking through the atmosphere?? that doesnt do anything.. it doesnt leave a "hole" .. nothing. Its from the millions of cars and factories etc that pump out all the garbage into the air. Global warming causes odd weather, extreme swings in normal temps.. etc.. NOT making it hot.

Now... nice move on tesla's part for a simple solution.... How much does a titanium plate that big cost!!!??

lol

Whatever steps Telsa or any dealership can do to fix something is driven to success

TwoFaceTony,

Sorry if my post seemed like an attack on your person. I didn't mean to attack you as a person. I meant to only debate your argument. Your opinions are valid, but you should know that dissenting opinions are just as valid. Hope you don't feel alienated by that. I meant only to start a healthy conversation.

Anyway, sorry if that made these comments go off topic.

I love Tesla, and would happily buy an electric car of this quality if it were in my budget. A good article from Seth Colaner.
