Hello, Im currently working on purchasing parts for my first Gaming PC build, but I'm still not sure if i7 is worth the extra $100, since I've been told that it's obsolete for the basic experience unless you're working on rendering / editing videos or something along those lines. Is this true? I really know nothing about PC parts and I'm pretty new to all of the building process, so thanks for the help in advance :)

Yes for the most part it is true. The i7 has more hyperthreads. Chances are that these wont be used in 99% of the games out there. Unless you are doing video, the advantage of owning and i7 is not much.
Pretty much this. If you are looking for a specific i5 3570K would be nice. Sure the 3770K is 3.5GHz but the 3570K can clock higher so better potential for gaming.
the difference it 1-5 FPS for $100 more. Go with the i5
