It takes real guts to pull the plug on your game sales when you're concerned about server stability, but that's exactly what Arena.net has done with its just-launched game, Guild Wars 2. According to company spokesperson Rubi Bayer, "Ensuring the best possible play experience for our fans is our highest priority. We’ve said before that we would be willing to temporarily disable first-party digital sales if we felt our high player concurrency may compromise player experiences. We have now reached that point.

Effective immediately we have disabled sales via buy.guildwars2.com. To be clear, box and digital sales are still available via our retail partners. We are tracking our concurrency closely while expanding our infrastructure. We’ll re-enable first-party digital sales as soon as we feel that we can do so safely."



If you haven't picked up a copy yet, you still can -- but the first-party delay is designed to ensure that activations and logins don't overwhelm the server infrastructure. While this may frustrate some players, it's still nice to see a company willing to put server performance ahead of the bottom line. Diablo 3's launch and first days were...erratic, thanks to massive server problems. Obviously in an ideal situation, we'd have neither server problems nor a need for this sort of decision, but attempting to accurately model initial demand is difficult. Given that the game is still available, this type of compromise should strike a fair balance.

Look for our own take on Guild Wars 2 in the very near future. Those of you who've bought the game already, how are you enjoying it?

Yeah; I was Alpha, Beta, and a long time player on GW1, and although this is not the same setup server wise I know how they were and I imagine still are about impression, play-ability, and value to the customer. As for this rendition I have not as of yet jumped in. I am having a bit of difficulty paying $70 for a game with any kind of subscribablity in it as it makes no sense to me. $30- even 50.00 I can do, $69.99+ a monthly fee fricking really. Of course I do not know the details yet the firt GW was a no subscription deal this could be the same but I was under the impression it was a monthly subscriber!

I checked and that moves it right back into consideration it is supposed to have great graphics etc.

My sister has been playing  this game a lot the past week, so i thought i would give it a try. I just started playing it to day, but right now its pretty good. However where many mmos start to lose me is their end game content. Only level 10 atm and will have to wait to see how i feel about this game later on.

Good for them for trying to resolve the issue rather than just worrying about how to rake in the cash. Whether or not they should have already had the infrastructure in place is another matter. It'd be great if the game does really well, I like the model they use.

I love that they are valuing quality over quantity. It really shows character. Of course if they let the same thing happen to them as Blizzard did, they'd get a bad rep.

There are a lot of great things in the game, but it still only took a week to become pretty boring.
