That happens to me too.  If I play the original Doom, or Robotica on the Saturn, or Oblivion on the 360, I get sick to my stomach within 30 minutes.  It took me many many days to beat Doom - since I had to break up the sessions.

I have a lazy left eye (and legs, and torso, and hands...) which really reduces my 3D perception - I wonder if that adds to the effect.  I don't get carsick or anything:  Only videogames with bad refresh rates do it.  I found, after playing EverQuest for a while, that I could negate the effect by always running forward at the same time that I turned.  Since EQ doesn't lock the cursor to the center of the screen, it's easy to eliminate the incidental spinning.

I was reading about that game mirrors edge. They put a black dot in the center of the screen so you can focus on it to keep from getting sick.

Yes, old thread, but one which interests me (my degrees are in computer science and psychology).

3vi1 said what reputable scientists have found: that subliminal messages are hogwash. It's an old law of neurology: "A weak stimulus elicits a weak response." Not only do such messages used as advertisements not sell products, people (when tipped off that there were going to be subliminals) routinely misidentify what the subliminal message was. Banning them was a kneejerk reaction by the FCC, which actually lent them more credence than they should have gotten.

The question remains, though, why anyone would go through the trouble of inventing a new technology which mesmerises people and causes them to stay at their computers, staring into the screen for days on end, until they die. We have that already. It's called MMORPGs.

The thread pump was totally worth that.  Well done Clem.  And that's why I've never touched an MMO.

Thanks: 2 times

I have a friend that used to get sick playing the old 3D game Descent.

He couldn't be in front of it for more than 10 minutes and he'd have to quit.

He absolutely loved that game too.

I, on the other hand, spent HOURS wasting time on that one. LOL!

Descent and Descent II were the best space shooters of their time. Awesome graphics for the time with a storyline that sucked you in.

I don't understand people's infatuation with World of Warcraft. I can't stand MMORPGs. Besides the subscription costs, there is no definite end to the game. I prefer regular RPGs with a start, middle and ending.
