Hey all I am new here, I just thought I would say hello to every one.

I kinda need some advice on upgrading my comp here are its specs

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+
Memory: PC-133 256MB
MotherBoard: ECS K7S5A
HardDrive: Maxtor 20GB 5400RPM ATA 100
Video card: STB Velocity RIVA 128 4MB 1X AGP
sound card + Network card: intagrated
O.S.: windows 95 ( Yeah i know I gotta update that soon...)

my question is what needs to upgraded first? I am kinda new to the "build your own computer" idea so dont flame me PLZ. I built this 14 months ago. Games like Neverwinter nights, and Might and Magic 9 are starting to run a bit choppy. and I figured I should upgrade soon. I think my video card could be one of the reasons why my comp is getting kinda laggy in games. I am looking to spend 80$-140$. any ideas??

with that budget theres really not much you can do. I would say go for 512 ram and see if you can get a copy of 98se upgrade. 256MB pc133 goes for about $34 and I dont think a 98se upgrade should be too high.

One of the things I love about the ECS K7S5A (although many here curse the name) is the ability to move from SDRAM to DDR without having to change motherboards. I think you should junk the PC133 SDRAM and move on to PC2100 DDR. You can find sticks of 256mb for about $50 at most places. I recommend shopping at Newegg.com (note the advertisement at the top of the webpage ).

The processor is good but you definately should update your operating system ASAP. The video card doesn't help things either. If you're looking for decent gaming performance at a good price you should also look into the Radeon 8500LE. These can also be found on Newegg for about $80-$100.

DDR stands for double data rate, its essentially twice as fast as SDRAM. And yes I am one of the people who despise ECS and SiS, just never had any luck with them and neither have the people I talk to.

Guys, his ram if fine! Look at the video card in his system! Getting more memory will be a waste of money, upgrading the video card is the number one priority. For 80-100 dollars you can get a Radeon 8500 or GF4 Ti 4200. Either will be good for your system and let you run NWN and M&M9 at blazing speeds. Windows 95 should be upgraded also, but you're already getting 98SE from your uncle, so you're fine there.

For gaming, the video card is definitely top-priority, after the OS of course Next would be RAM, then hard drive, then...

Oh, and I recommend looking into the Radeon 8500le
here's one place to get it:

If you want to stay within your budget, and still make a huge difference, I recommend the following two products:

ATi Radeon 8500LE (128mb) = $88
Crucial 256mb SDRAM = $53

GRAND TOTAL = $141

You'd still be using SDRAM, but upgrading to 512mb should hold you for a while. And Venom is right, the most difference will come from the video card.

Voodoo3? Dude have you been living in a cave for about 5 years? 3DFX and their Voodoo lineup went out of business a long time ago (around the GF2 GTS time, since then the GF2 Ultra, GF3, GF3 Ti500, GF4 Ti have been released, all much faster than the last). I don't even know how many more times the Radeon 8500/Ti4200 are faster than a Voodoo3, if I had to guess at least 10x, Voodoo5 can't touch a Radeon 7500 or GF3.

aahhh HOLY**** THAT raden thing is a monster compared to what I have. The dealer I bought from 14 months ago said that the Voodoo 3 was the fastest video card out there and he wanted 240$ for it so I just bought a Riva 128 for 70$. The last thing I heard about Nvidi was that they were making some kinda of video card that was sopposed to change the world, it was call a TnT 2 or something. I only got the internet 5 weeks ago. and no I dont live in a cave. I just dont really know much about computers. ( I play paintball ALLOT and have lots of lan games with my friends.) My computer is like 5 X better than theirs tho, they dont even have a 3d card in ANY of there computers!

Well, the Radeon 8500LE is definately a monster compared to what you have but most would consider it an "entry level" gamers card. That card is nothing compared to, oh let's say, a Radeon 9700...
