So my wife has a 2006 Mac Mini, that we bought used or was it refurb on Ebay? Anyway we now have it for like 5 years and we have had our share of problems including having to replace certain components, but hey it's an Apple, graphics are so so and it's only able to run up to OS X 10.6 with no way to update or upgrade, the cooling fan runs way too loud but it has to run on high RPM due to the fact it gets way hot in that little space, yes they have been redesigned since 2006 and the price tag is a lot higher, but you get what you pay for. It's a great space saver, but I think it makes more sense to have the form factor of the Apple Power PC towers, yes takes up more space but, it has more space in it and it's not cramped like the Mini is, but if you live in a tight space like a dorm or igloo I suppose the Mini makes more sense.

Sacrificing space for little sound and low head seems like the best option to me 😛

You best option is to ditch the apple and get a real pc.

well, really.. in my opinion you can get a much better pc for the price of the mac. They are truly overpriced.

I couldn't agree with you more, in fact I was just saying to her today that, you can still run old apps on Xp whereas on Snow Leopard forget it, your out of luck if you can't find older versions of the software and then good luck if they are free!

Yes I'm sure we can, the thing is my wife is stuck on Mac and she hates Windows, only option is what we have now with the Mac Mini, Windows boot camp, but she rarely uses that side of the Mac. I will some day build a PC based computer that will run 0sx and Unix on multiboot.

So a VM with Windows and OSx? That'd be cool.

if your stuck with the mac you could always measure your cooling fan and spend a couple bucks and buy one that is quieter and moves almost as much air or one that is as loud and moves more. just make sure you get a pwm fan if the mac can take it

I actually think the problem is in software limitations. Sim (and his wife) hit a point where they can't update the OS, and other programs are leaving their version of the OS in the dust :P
