I am going to set up my computer for recording guitars and stuff. I am wondering if there is any operating system that works best.
I use Windows 98SE at the moment.

My computer is prety old
1.3ghz T'bird
crap soundcard - (upgradeing)
50GB HDD
GF3
128MB SDRAM - (gonna upgrade to 512)
^stuff like that^

any help greatly appreciated

OS X apears to be favorite.

But your choice really. I'd go for one which uses NTFS, ie 2Kpro of XP pro.

Actually, wouldn't OS 9 be a better choice in this case (much more plug-ins)?....but that would only be if he's doing a lot of stuff...it doesn't sound like he is....so like you said Windows 2000, or Windows XP will be fine...don't even think he'll need Pro...

And I would bet that there are alot more programs available for the XP platform too.

But if your really into the professional end of things buy a MAC. My neighbor is a "Rock Star", well not really but he has recorded several times in nashville and he said all of the puters there, at the recording studio, are MACs.

My mate said soemthin about using an TOS (on atari ST) and then into soemthing elce because the OS is so simple it can do it wel or soemthin. does anyone know anythin about that cos i got an atari ST in the loft i could dust off.

I'm actually planning to go to school to become a Recording Engineer. I've visited about six different schools with engineering programs... they all use Macs.

Dispite the fact that macs are under powered compaired to pcs. But they have this major advantage where by they dont BSOD or GPF or crash for no real reason. some times i h8 M$
