Go ahead and check one more state off the list of where you're not allowed to text message while driving. New Mexico is catching up with the majority of the country with a ban intended to prevent distracted driving that goes into effect tomorrow (Tuesday), after which offenders will be hit with a $25 fine for the first violation and $50 fine for subsequent infractions.

New Mexico's ban states that a person shall not read or view a text or manually type on a mobile communication device while driving a motor vehicle, the only exception being to contact emergency help. The law applies to all drivers.

"A lot of vehicle complaints we receive about people being drunk, when we contact them, they aren't intoxicated. They are messing with their phone," Farmington police Sgt. Dave Monfils told The Daily Times.

Following New Mexico's ban, only six states remain that don't yet have laws on the books banning texting while driving for all drivers, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA). Those states include Arizona, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Some of those states have laws in place that prohibit texting while driving by school bus drivers and novice drivers, but none of them ban the practice for every single driver.

The dangers of texting while driving have been in the spotlight over the last few years. According to a 2013 study conducted by researchers at Cohen Children's Medical Center in New Hyde Park, texting while driving contributes to more than 3,000 annual teen deaths nationwide and 300,000 injuries. Those figures mean texting while driving is now a greater risk to teens than drinking and driving, which contributes to an estimated 2,700 teen driving deaths and 282,000 injuries per year.

I'm honestly shocked it still hasn't been banned nationally. Driving while distracted can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Is it okay to text while at a red light? I hate when people text and drive but I feel at a red light it should be fine.

it would better to convince people to not text and drive, rather giving the state a new revenue stream. Not everyone is retarded.

It's distracted driving and it affects others besides those that are texting.

Technology ~could~ come to the rescue, but I doubt phone companies will ever hobble texting in a moving car.

There are places where texting and driving is legal? o.o

@AllenJun I vote against that... it holds up traffic and you aren't focusing on the road, just because your stopped does not mean nothing will happen, it may not even be your fault and boom a car can plows in. Or in NYC when that happens drivers go crazy and speed around the car... seen it happen a few times :/ everyone in a rush.

Sending text message while driving can distract the driver that resulted to injuries and deaths. There are some states that banned texting while driving but there are several cities that do not have. However, the Department of Transportation thrown $550,000 toward researching if such regulation has an impact to society and every individual. Source: Gus Johnson dealer

The Department of Transportation, among other bodies and the general public at large, is concerned about texting while driving, which is very dangerous. Most states have texting while driving laws which which prevents it form happening, but the DOT has thrown $550,000 toward researching whether such regulations have an impact. So far, police in a number of states have not been able to catch too many people who are texting while driving though most are still likely doing it. We might need some quick cash to be able to pay for the tickets or the damages. As a citizen, we must be responsible enough to be following all sorts of rules and regulations before it is too late.

Texting while driving is becoming an epidemic. I see it all the time. I'm sure you do too. High end cars are now being equipped with auto braking systems. Why would they even invent such a thing if it weren't for distracted drivers? The number 1 distraction is cell phones. If I look in the rear view mirror and see a driver with their head down behind me I change lanes.

Only $25??  They should make them take a class on driving safety.  That would get their attention.
