Tomorrow kicks off the first day of Google I/O, and that means lots of product and service announcements throughout the week. One of those is likely to include the next major release of Android, though not before leaked screenshots made their way to the web. A couple of new icons in the screenshots has sparked a bit of speculation as to what feature updates are coming to Android.

One of them is the letter "L" in the status bar, which could simply indicate that this is a new version of Android. Google has been going in alphabetical order with each new major version update and naming the builds after desserts. It started with Cupcake, followed by Doughnut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, and KitKat. There's been speculation that the next version will be called Lollipop.

The images were plucked by Reddit user Doopl, who found the images in Google's Chromium Tracker, which has since been removed. In addition to the letter "L," both screenshots shows a bell icon in the upper right corner. It looks similar to the bell icon in the Chrome notification center. One user surmised it might be used to mute notifications, while another guessed that it could be for a Do Not Disturb mode.

You can also see what appears to be Chrome floating in the background, like a pop-out app. This could also indicate a new feature that will be implemented in Android L. Beyond that, however, the screenshots don't reveal a whole lot.

So Google is suddenly moving to a single word codename? Sure, there was Honeycomb, but it could have at least gone with Licking Lollipop or something here!

An account list, an L and a bell icon is hardly a glimpse of the new OS. Let's hope more juicy images are leaked soon.

That's actually a textbook example of a glimpse, as defined by Merriam-Webster ("to look briefly; We glimpsed him through the window as his car sped past"). But yes, I'm with you here -- it would be nice if more images were made available.

Then again, Google I/O kicks off tomorrow, so if a new Android build is in the cards, we won't have to wait long for more than just a glimpse.

Need to see more

Looks like a lot of wasted space in the background chrome browser... Either apps are now windowed without auto-maximize (which is horrible) or they were showing a tablet version on a phone screen size instead. It looks like google didn't get the memo that phones just aren't big enough to justify multiple foreground apps...

@RWilliams: The majority of Android codenames have been one word: Froyo, Gingerbread, etc.  You might be thinking of Ubuntu.

its going to be a Lemon.

its the new WebOS obviously
