Hi i have just installed mandrake on my hdd containing windows as the primary partition. The following is what i did :

1. partitioned some space for linux (including swap space) using partition magic pro 7.0 (thats the only program that works in windows and converts existing W.F.S into linux journised that i know of )

2. rebooted, installed mandrake 8.2

3. rebooted again and win98 booted up

4. went to win98 set the linux partition as primary(successful). and tired to set the win98 as logical but option area greyed out(unsuccessful ( _ _ )).

5. rebooted again and win98 booted up.

Problem withstanding :

1. how to get my hdd to boot up linux instead of win98?

2. can i install linux and win family in one hdd using partitions?

Thanks to all who viewed this. Your help is very much appreciated. ( ^ v ^ )/

Did you install bootmagic from the PMagic 7 cd?

You should have been prompted to make a boot floppy, during setup, for Mandrake and you could have booted that way. Make sure your win 98 files are backed up. . . . . . I use LILO and boot to the non-gui login.

You could try reconfiguring your Bootloader.

If you know what your doing you can put several operating systems on one HDD without any problems.

yups i agree as most of the latest os arent backward compatible with lagacy programs that works great and even if they are, usually these a bug or two hiding somewhere waiting to give u a bsod ... omg!
