>> Microsoft incorporated S3TC support into its DirectX 6.0 standard
First order of business: "Hey Microsoft... remember how you were suing us for using Android instead of your OS?"
Great article. If Apple has to pay due to the infringement does the money go to HTC or VIA//WTI?
It certainly is a big step for HTC. I am sure they will be getting a lot of licensing fees from this technology :)
Exactly right omegadraco. Right now HTC pays M$ I think 15 dollars per mobile handset they sell. M$ is currently trying to bargain with Samsung for the same amount. While the Samsung thing is not relevant here. The patents as well as technologies here are. The one huge competitor HTC has not beaten yet is I believe Samsung (in the smart phone specific tier). One if the main reasons for this is there screen's AMOLED+ anyone. On top op that many of the internals are chipset based for a smart phone as well. So this means they are at least to some degree in on that as well or at least with a closer internal tie to said technology. What does that means it is cheaper to build each phone. It also means some of that 15 dollar for each phone Microsoft gets now they will have to reduce or pay back to HTC because they own S3 and M$ uses S3 technologies in DirectX as well as other things that tie into it.
