A friend of mine has an aged Dell (about 2 years old, however the PSU is around one year old) and now the fan on his video card is failing. Rather than having him replace only the fan, I suggested that he get a higher-end card. I was thinking in the area of a 6800 - 7600, however I'm afraid to tell him to get something and have it be too power hungry. I figured the 7600 cards would be the better bet, newer, cheaper, and I heard that the 6800's tended to be energy hogs. Tell me what you think.

If I remember correctly, the 5900se was actually more power hungry than the 7600. Is the board AGP or PCIe? Only asking because I don't remember ever hearing of PCIe 5 series.

You're right, AGP board. It was actually my old Dell that he has (he's 2 years younger than me) and bought it off of me since it played WoW and CS:S pretty well. However, he doesn't have the money to get a whole computer till summer, this reason being why I'm asking about the card.

On another note, I thought that I heard that the 5000 and 6000 series were really power hungry, and the 7000 series seemed to reduce the amount of draw. That true?

Has to do with improved architecture but yes the 7xxx series tends to be more efficient with power then the FX series

BTW there are some PCIe FX series cards, didn't help em at all IMHO
