ok, I have collected thru time many misc parts, and I am trying to put together a unit for my kid. My question is... I have a Soyo sy-k7v Dragon and a Tyan Trinity 1598s Moboard and an AMD K6-2 450 and a K6-III 450 Proc. What combo will work best? Have Many other parts witch I'm sure will generate many other questions... but thats for later...
Thanks

I'm really not much on the old systems as I only got into PCs in the last 2 years but I'll try to help.

The Tyan is a Socket 7 board while the Soyo is a Socket A board. You will only be able to use one of those CPUs on the Tyan board. Pair it with the K6-3 450 with some SD RAM.

Here is a little on Sockt A:

Um... both those procs are Super7 socket, sorry Jordan.

Glorg (love the name ) -

Use the Tyan board. It will support up to a 550 K6 2 or 3 and up to a meg of PC100. If I remember correctly it had problems above 768 megs though. It has an AGP 2 slot which kind of limits card choices. With either of those procs an old Voodoo3 or TNT2 vid card will be fine.

ah. so the Tyan will be used and I'll save the soyo till I find a K7 proc. I should have seen there was a diferance. The K6-2 and 3, both being 450's, is one better in some way than the other? It would be easy to assume the K6-III has some extra features. The vid cards I have to chose from are...Gainward gf4 mx-440 w/64mb, Diamond Viper V770 I think it has 32mb and an old ATI rage pro turbo unsure if it has any memory on it (will have to do some more research). I think I'l save the gf4 for when I find a K7 proc.

"I think I'l save the gf4 for when I find a K7 proc."

I think that's a good idea, also the MX440 will be AGP 4x while the older cards will be AGP 2x/1x and the Tyan board will probabaly only be AGP2x or 1x.

The saga continues...What do you think, when I have a keyboard pluged in, the thing wont boot. With it not pluged in, I get blu screened. ***Stop: 0x0000007b (0xf081b84c, 0xc00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) inaccessible_Boot_Device. However, with the flopy drive not conected, it wants me to hit f1 to continu or delete to enter setup. Of course i cant with out a keyboard. tried same keyboard on diferant pc and worked fine. tried known working keyboard from current pc and still had boot problems. Any ideas?

I'm thinking this moboard has problems.

That mobo should have PS/2 for keyboards and mice, I hope it's not the old AT style keyboard jack. I've seen them with AT for keyboard and PS/2 for mouse on some of the super7 boards. If it's PS/2, try a PS/2 to USB adaptor. There should be at least one USB port on that mobo. You may have to go into BIOS to enable USB keyboard support.
