I would like to know if the socket 940 from amd going to be around for a while????I know they are dropping the 939 and the 754 soon.

No, they dropped the 940, they are sticking with the 939, going to drop the 754.

940 is mainly for the Opteron server CPUs.

I thought the 939 was dropped and the 94o was staying.
I was thinking of buying a 940 so i'm glad i asked around first!!

The 940 is NOT dropped, it will be around for a very long time, but it is, has been, and is supposed to be in the future a server platform. Much like intel's Xeon platforms such as slot 2.

Anyhow, 939 is here for at least a short while, but it might be replaced in the middle of next year by a new socket for ddr2 support.

I think socket 754 also won't be around for a long time.
Most Athlon64 processors will drop to 939, and only Opteron will use socket940.
