Click Here For the Catalyst 4.9 Betas. Apparently ATi is trying to get their Doom 3 performance up early. Heh, the final 4.8 drivers arn't even out at the moment. Browsing on the Far Cry forums, apparently this speed things up for one user with a 9800XT. I don't know D3, but i'll update on the Far Cry performance.

Remember these are Beta Drivers:

The BETA display drivers found here are offered AS IS, without warranty of any kind, and have NOT been completely qualified by ATI. Usage of these drivers are without support of any kind, and you use them at your own risk.

ATI does NOT recommend installing these drivers in systems used for mission critical operations or where productivity of any kind is a concern.

Unless you are very comfortable with installing and un-installing drivers, we DO NOT recommend that you use the drivers provided here. These BETA Drivers are NOT SUPPORTED by ATI Customer Care or any other ATI department.

AMAZING difference...the game runs so sweet now.

With the 4.8's the frame or picture or w/e u wanna call it would "break" with sudden movements of the mouse or in fast paced action and sometimes there would be some lag here and there even with all the settings on "crap"...well no more of that with these drivers ( or at least very little, barely noticeable)

Thanks SS, these drivers are amazing

Glad to see the game is running good on your 9600SE Well, I just benchmarked Far Cry...\\

Settings:

FC Patch - 1.1
Program Used: Far Cry benchmark: HardwareOC.hu
Demo: Steam
Maximum Detail
Radeon 9800 Pro @ 445/371

Catalyst 4.8 - 41.6
Catalyst 4.9 - 49.1

Note sure what ATi did to their Direct3D, but I like it Anyone else with Far Cry and a 9800 XT and Under Vid Card care to give it a try? Possibly with a different demo?

yea im amazed at this cards power.. im running doom at 800X600 on medium settings with all options up cept the last. I get 40-60 frames when i just walking around and sometimes theyll drop to 18 in heavy action...but hell, still aint bad

Joe i also used that "performance boost" tweak ( in the PC gaming part of the forum), and that made a huge difference too.. You should deff give that a try as well if you havent already

are there are "strange" things going on with these drivers?.....sorta like what Nvidia did with killing the lighting quality?

I am a little sceptical about

Catalyst 4.8 - 41.6
Catalyst 4.9 - 49.1

with no sort of IQ loss....especially with a card thats been out for a long time with a game thats been out for a long time.

seeing the X800pro scores in D3 may have freaked them out.

"I am a little sceptical"

same here. I don't think the image quality has changed, it might have been something with my system. I'll re-install the 4.8 Beta Drivers tomorrow and do another test with the same demo and a different demo.

Wow ATi moved REALLY quickly to get these things going. I would have thought this would be something that would start in a month or so and then keep rolling! Kudos ATi. I wonder if this means that they've been secretly working on it for a while now. Either way ATi's doing a good job trying to close that gap with nvidia in terms of driver support but this just shows again their level of dedication to that task. Again kudos and keep up the good work, eh!

I was hoping a reputable hardware site might have checked these out. Has anyone got any links of such an event?

Nope, no links that I know of. Firing Squad usually has some good Driver Reviews, but I dunno if they'll review beta drivers(though these are a little different than your standard beta). The forums at Planetdoom.com might have some threads about performance with the new drivers.

I wanted to do a clean install for these drivers, so i read the guide to wiping out catalysts off your pc completely. I deleted em in the registry, add/remove, deleted c:/ati, and did a file search and deleted some stuff. The only prob is during the file search i couldnt delete somethings, is that ok? or do i need to get rid of all of it?...im so paranoid and its driving me nuts

Well, looking at some benchmarks and reading what people have to say, apparently these don't do much for 9x00 cards Hopefully the official release will help more... people with the 9x00 cards are the ones who need it the most! Though if I did own a top of the line ATi card, i'd expect them to work harder boosting performance for that card.

Woah! I just switched from Catalyst 4.3 to the Beta 4.9 and Doom 3 is running ALOT smoother on my second rig(1800+, 512MB PC2100, 9500 Pro). It runs smoother now on 800x600 with medium detail, than it did at 800x600 with low detail and no specular or shadows, using the 4.3 Drivers. So, somewhere between those and the new 4.9 betas, ATi has certainly increased their OpenGL Performance.
