If you want some ideas on what to get for a budget system go to http://www.sharkyextreme.com/gu...cle.php/10708_3294771__8
I would get either an Asus A7n8X or Abit NF7-S

Safest bet is the Asus A7N8X Deluxe (E version if you want) or the Abit NF7-S

There are Intel solutions as well you could mention. Asus P4S8X is not a bad entry board, under 60 bucks with 8x AGP support with HT support (no 800FSB support though) A P4S800 with 800FSB support and 8x AGP for $72.00. This a SIS chipset boards and they are a very dependable chipset these days. There is the P4P8X with Intel 865 chipset for about $82. List can go on and on. with more expensive Intel boards also supporting a upgrade path to Prescott CPU due out next month. AMD Athlon was a very strong chip in it day (and still is in some ways) but with a AMD system using this chip there will be no upgrade path. You will have build again all over. When you want a upgrade. While it is true that the prescott will eventually move to a different socket and require a different MB when second generation comes out, it will be offered for the socket 478 for first year.

If you have enough money go for a good Intel setu up. If not go AMD. I would'nt suggest Intel if you're going to have to skimp on other components just to afford the CPU.

True but don't skimp on ram either get atleast 512mg and if your tight get a little less CPU to get enough ram. A 2.0 with 512 meg or more will overall outperform a 2.4 or more with only 256 meg under XP with any brand CPU.

I would have to recommend a a7n8x-x budget board that oc's great and performs just as well as any dual channel board it just lacks some added features. You can pick one up from www.newegg.com  for about 70 bucks you will be happy I game all the time on that board

Something is wrong here, buy a cpu/mother board with no upgrade path and a 250 buck plus video card?. Buy a Intel system for a little more (that is upgradable) and spend a little less on video card (find a 9500Pro for about 150 and overclock it a bit as it has 8 pipeline texture units like 9700 and 9800 cards, 9600 is 4 pieline) and you will not be disapointed and you will have something that will be viable for a while!

yeah I agree the P4 would be a better solution, but if the PC is for gaming strictly speaking, a 9800Pro on an AMD 2500+ system will own a 9500Pro on a 2.66C
IMO go for 2.66C w/ GForce 5900SE. Man I could do some crazy [censored]if I got that hardware under my h2O sys.

Yes the AMD System with the Radeon 9800 Pro, will greatly perform better than the P4 System with a slower Video Card...

pcs2000 is always trying to convince people that are planning on going AMD, to go Intel.

Stop it already!

When you stop trying to sell Athlon as a superoir chip. When it is compared to a P4C of simular rating, the AMD loses everytime. And that is before we even metion the overclock potentail of a Intel vs AMD cpu. Intel P4C overclocks very sweetly to speeds/ratings that Athlon owners can only dream about.
