Hello all, whazzzzzzzzzzzzzzup? No, no, that's not getting old...anyway, I plan on building a new PC in the future, but for now I'd like to upgrade my current Voodoo3 3000. I'm quite disapointed about the recent news about Voodoo, but I won't get into that. Anyway, I'm not sure what to go with, ATI or nVidia? I've read that nVidia chips are super fast, but I'm somewhat hesitant because I've heard the graphics are less than spectacular. What about ATI? I'm just looking for some opinions, don't want to start a "flame" war or anything.

Thanks,

Aside from the obvious that ATI offers better 2d/3d image quality...and that 'out-of-the-box' the Radeon was slightly faster then the GF2...

You'll notice that the Radeon is not only a great graphics card because so many of the new features introduced you can use now and in the future (some being now)...it offers a bundle of multimedia features.

TV (ViVO), capture, DVD decoding, recording (tv).

The GF2 is still quite affordable in the *cough* United States *cough* so with the lack of many of these featues it still may be worth it to you?

You decide. Image qualiy, for me, is definitely more important then a few more FPS...but wait the Radeon is a bit faster.

Yes, image quality is definately more important to me...which is why I favored the Voodoo. ATI had me leary because I've read the stories about some of the OEM cards not performing to specification. I was also worried about compatibility: which card has better support...drivers and so on?

So Why Don't You Get A Voodoo5 then?

A voodoo 5 probably isnt a bad idea. Given the fact that you can get one retail version for 179 bux. Hell, thats a better value than a radeon sdr and geforce mx are combined!

Considering the price for a V5 5500 card right now (<$200), it's a value card now. 🙂

If you ask me, the value category is the place to dominate. There are more potential upgraders walking around with 150 bux in their wallet than there are freaks like us that would chop off our arm and sell it to science for the latest and greatest nVidia offering.

I think Voodoo will pick up alot of much needed business from this price drop and probably could have done this 2 or 3 monthes earlier and been better off for it.

Yeah i think that what he needs it's a Voodoo5 , he was talking about Compatibility and Image Quality and we all know that it sounds like a 3Dfx product...

Best of all the price drop makes it look better: PriceWatch's Least Price for a Voodoo5 is : $ 159 !

Great Deal.

well, it all really depends on his budget.

visual quality with v5 and radeon is very similar. but radeon offers more things like dvd decoding, capture, vivo, etc.

Radeon is faster than v5 in 32 bit color. But will you play more than $100 to get it? thats a decision you gotta make. I would probably stick with the v5 and save some bucks and invest it on a 19" or 20" monitor. Its a better experience than some few extra frames.

Anyone think our 19 inch monitors will ever become old or obsolete anytime soon? I am not buying another monitor for a LONG time!!! ( ditto speakers/dvd12xdrive/cdrw12x-10x-32x).

Possible in 10 years when the only thing will be sold are LCDs/Plasma monitors and waht ever else they think of. Not anytime soon though, the things still cost way to much! 600 bucks for a 15inch, come on!

I suppose I was deterred from the Voodoo 5 because of their latest announcement. You're right though, that would probably be the best (value wise) video upgrade I could make right now.

Oh yeah, I have a 19" monitor, too, a ViewSonic PS790, got it from a buddy for $200 about 4 months ago...what a deal!

Oh, man, no. 15" is just too small these days. I've got a 21" Intergraph monitor here at work, a co-worker has a 24" Intergraph which simply rocks. It's basically the same height as the 21", but it's much wider. You gotta respect 24" of radiation blasting at ya.
