Hi guys, my gf started making youtube videos a little while ago and I've been editing the footage on my old sony vaio flip 14 with an I5 4200u and integrated graphics. It's awful, video playback is like a slideshow and exporting the final video takes up to 8 hours and heats my laptop up into the 90's C.

So youtube is starting to actually get serious and I've been planning a ryzen build for 1080p editing and some gaming. Problem is, I've never had a good cpu so I have no idea if a 1700 would be massive over kill, or worth it for future proofing.

1700 would be good for that and streaming if you want to do that 😛

The thing with editing videos is no matter what CPU you get, there will always be room for improvement. The question to ask is how much you are willing to spend on the new setup. If you want to bump it up from your old (and slow) laptop setup, then a 1600 will be great. But even after your new rig, you'll think in the back of your mind, what if I went with a ... (next step up).

Also keep in mind the 2x00 are about to drop on the 19th (?) so a 2600 or 2700 might be worth waiting for.

Yeah for video editing and gaming would be just fine.

compared to that laptop you are going to be amazed by the speed of everything. I'm sure it will feel like night and day once you get everything up and running

I also think that 1700 will be enough, you will do a good job with that :wink:
